For most people, instant noodles are considered as a substitute for rice, because the portions are quite filling with a wide variety of flavors on offer. The price is also very affordable and it also can be served quickly. That’s why instant noodles will always be one of everyone’s favorite foods. But behind its popularity, there is a lot of information circulating about instant noodles. People become confused to distinguish which are facts and which are myths because of the large amount of information circulating about instant noodles. Here is some information about the myths and facts about instant noodles.
Myth: Instant noodles are produced using wax so that the cooking water turns yellow and oil appears.
In fact, wax is not used at all in the process of making instant noodles. The oil that appears is the residue from the deep frying process. Deep frying is a process of preserving instant noodles by reducing the water content contained in the noodles. In the frying process, the oil enters the instant noodles which will come out when boiled.
Myth: The noodles in instant noodles are chewy in texture and don’t break easily because they contain rubber.
Instant noodles contain gluten compounds which are usually contained in wheat flour, it’s purpose is for thickening noodles. Instant noodles that are circulating in the market are all registered with BPOM; if they contain rubber, they will not automatically get a distribution permit from BPOM.
Myth: MSG and preservatives in instant noodles and seasonings are harmful to the body.
It is true that there is MSG and preservatives in the instant noodle seasoning, but the content is still within the safe limits that have been set by BPOM. If consumed normally, these preservatives can be neutralized by the body. However, if you consume instant noodles frequently, especially every day, there will be a buildup of preservatives in the body and that can be dangerous.
Instant noodles are not recommended to be frequently eaten, especially every day because instant noodles cannot replace a full meal (wholesome food). Although instant noodles have a high carbohydrate content, instant noodles cannot meet the needs of other nutrients. So it is highly recommended to add vegetables or other food ingredients when eating instant noodles in order to meet our daily nutritional needs.
